Matagouri, tūmatakuru or wild Irishman, is a tangle-branched thorny plant endemic to New Zealand.  Walking through a block on a sheep station, it's common to find tufts of wool caught on the plants.  This particular image, taken in Cantebury, shows wool draping from a matagouri branch amongst brown top grass and the blue of a freshwater creek behind it.
